Marinko Rakočević is an Illarian mercenary who spends much of his time floating between ports, stations, and employers throughout southern Tyvus.

He formerly served under the Socialist Interstellar Union of Illarian Planets as a marine in the least developed reaches of Illarian space, combatting smugglers, riot control on stations, and dealing with pirates. Local politicians, distant from the competence of the capital, would also use Rakočević and his group for personal labor. This, combined with a toxic culture among his fellow soldiers, grew an intense distaste for the Illarian government in him.

While he had completed his service by the time of The Avenue Plot, Rakočević found himself supporting the initial Illarian State as it attempted to undo the corruption and stagnation of the former Union. However, the following series of political changes quickly made him disillusioned with this change, and he turned to independent mercenary work on the edges of and outside the Empire.
