Challenge levels and their associated difficulty

Cogent revolves around a mechanic called the ‘Challenge Level’, or ‘CL,’ which is a number that the DM may assign to certain actions taken by the players in the course of roleplay. The number represents how difficult an action is to accomplish.

CL’s of escalating value represent tasks of escalating difficulty.

In order to beat a challenge level, a player must make attempts using 1d2 rolls until they rack up enough successes to beat the challenge level. For example, beating a task with a challenge level of 1 requires 2 successes. Beating a task with a challenge level of 5 requires 6 successes.

The total number of attempts a character has is determined by a character’s attributes, skills, and proficiencies and whether those attributes, skills, and proficiencies can be. A character starts with 1 d2, no matter what. Then, the character receives +1 die for every point in the skill being rolled.

If a character with 2 strength and 3 athletics, for example, is attempting to scale a wall with an athletics check to beat a CL of 3, she rolls:

One Base Die +dice from Strength +dice from Athletics
▢ +1d2 ▢▢ +2d2 ▢▢▢ +3d2

Making for a total of 6d2. If rolling on Discord with RPBot, the code is !roll 6d2.

RPBot will return this string of numbers:

@Etzan has rolled 7 (1 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 7 )

Count the number of 2’s, and you have your number of successes! In the above example, my character only obtained 1 success, which is not enough to beat the CL of 3.

If I want the bot to tell me how many successes I got without my having to count them myself, I can use the following method. I can subtract the number of die I am rolling from my result. It looks like this:

Etzan !roll 6d2-6
Avrae @Etzan has rolled 1 (1 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 7, -6)

If I was rolling 7 dice, I would do this:

Etzan !roll 7d2-7
Avrae @Etzan has rolled 1 (1 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8, -7)

You can also add modifiers or subtract them easily using this method. For example, say my character is wearing a full suit of armor (+3 to the minimum number of victories), I would roll:

Etzan !roll 7d2-7+3
Avrae @Etzan has rolled 6 (2 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 10, -7, 3)

On Aoshtai-related Discords[]

We've programmed the expression !cogent to roll Cogent dice automatically. Example:

Etzan !cogent 7
Avrae Result: 7d2 (1, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 1) - 7

Total victories: 2
