Arthur Wilhelm Brand is a Karian human scientist, researcher, and conservation advocate specializing in the xenology of the superhabitable planet Mayar. He was born on Kornhofen and received an education in biology and chemistry at the City University of Kornhofen, Tielen, before attending the prestigious Mayar Xenology Masters Program at Corbanian University.
While attending Corbania, he dated Adelinda Siegel, a fellow xenology student, whom he married after they graduated in 20 NAC. That same year, they were snapped up as junior researchers by the Mayar Conservation Alliance, an international non-profit dedicated to the study of Mayar's plant and animal life, the documenting of the effects of resource exploitation and the arrival of invasive species, and the conservation of the planet's natural habitat.
Brand currently resides on Mayar with his wife.

| Kornhofen is the economic and financial capital of Karstedt. It is a planet home to six billion people known for its dense cities, cosmopolitanism, individualism, lax morals, and relative secularism compared with the rest of the country's strong emphasis on tradition, religion, and social responsibility. Kornhofers tend to believe in social mobility and that their talents, hard work, and decisions determine their fates. However, they live in a highly unequal society with a corrupt government and rapacious business culture which skews towards the wealthy and productive.
Arthur was born to middle class parents on Kornhofen in -5 NAC, five years before the start of the new Concourse Wars. He grew up a city boy and went to decent private schools. He was interested in science, physics, chemistry, biology, and zoology very early on and was a bookish student. He was singled out as gifted, although had problems fitting in socially. | |

Arthur came of age politically at the time of the National Election of 12 NAC. The  Karian National Party had governed Karstedt for almost a decade with a war going on and the constitution suspended. Power was concentrated in the hands of a popular general who became temporary dictator. He gave up his powers in 11 NAC, leading quickly to an election in 12 NAC. The WFP, a reformist and progressive party based out of Rhenburg, was popular among students and young people at the time. It promised to downsize the military, reform the economy, and end corruption, which a young and idealistic Arthur found attractive. He's voted with them out of habit ever since.
